Image and Video Generation AI News — 2026-09-28

OpenAI shut down Sora (both the app and API) on 2026-09-24, kicking off a reshuffle among closed video-generation players. Meanwhile, the open camp independently converged across four platforms on lightweight 7B Qwen-Image-2.1 and Minimax H3 as the leading contenders.

Image and Video Generation AI News Roundup — 2026-09-28

Hey everyone, thanks for waiting! The image and video generation AI space was seriously moving this week, so here’s the report 🔥🔥 The biggest news is OpenAI abruptly cutting off Sora (both the app and API) on 2026-09-24, making the question of whether video-generation AI can actually make money finally feel out in the open. Meanwhile, the open-source camp has fully taken center stage with Alibaba’s Qwen-Image-2.1 (just 7B parameters, yet rapidly closing in on major closed models 🐉) and Minimax H3, and honestly the community seems even more energized about those. That said, not every social platform has the same mood: technical spaces (r/StableDiffusion, Lemmy’s stable_diffusion community, and the ComfyUI crowd on YouTube) are buzzing with serious tool comparisons, while broader-audience spaces (major Reddit subs and Pinterest) are more likely to go viral over distrust like, “Aren’t these AI images wildly exaggerated?” That was the big discovery this time 🙌 Also, X was unexpectedly a total miss this round (I’ll explain why later).

Qwen-Image-2.1 and Minimax H3 independently led Reddit, Lemmy, Bluesky, and YouTube to the same conclusion—the current top open models—so confidence in that finding is genuinely high 🙆

Platform by platform

Reddit: Only 12 threads surfaced from one search term, but the quality was dense. Technical discussion in r/StableDiffusion explicitly named Krea 2, Qwen-Image 2.1, and Minimax H3 as the current winners. In major general subs such as r/mildlyinfuriating and r/CriticalState, though, outrage stories about AI exaggeration and deception went far more viral (thousands to over 10,000 points). The highest technical discussion reached 13 points, while the Nikon Small World misconduct controversy reached 1,104 points—this gap neatly captures the difference in how open and closed AI are being received.

X: This was almost a complete miss for the topic 😅 The session was geolocated to Croatia, and searches reused Explore trend terms—crypto, giveaway spam, F1 fandom, former-Yugoslav historical debates, travel photos, and Taylor Swift. As a result, none of the 40 posts contained “AI,” “image generation,” or “video generation.” The volume target (20 posts) was met, but topical relevance was 0%.

YouTube: Eleven review videos covered key releases including GPT Image 2.5, Qwen-Image-2.1, LTX-2.5, and Wan 3.0. Open-source coverage often took the form of ComfyUI setup videos testing how quickly models could run on viewers’ own GPUs, while closed-source coverage has settled into recurring monitoring formats such as Midjourney’s monthly update videos. However, many view counts and channel names could not be retrieved, so the scale of attention itself could not be measured.

Bluesky: An automated news account, gen-ai.news, was the center of this round’s information sources, with particularly high density on the closed-source side: Runway, Adobe, Midjourney, OpenAI, Meta, and ByteDance all announced something almost daily. The Sora shutdown post (3,571 likes) was the biggest viral moment here. On the open-source side, aside from Qwen-Image-2.1 (82 likes), the material was mainly older posts from early 2025; there were almost no recent personal posts about Wan or LTX.

Lemmy: !«メールアドレス» is effectively the only real hub. It receives near-daily ComfyUI tool updates around Qwen-Image-2.1 and Minimax H3 and functions almost like a “new GitHub/HuggingFace links” feed. There is no dedicated closed-source community; controversy stories instead wash into general communities such as technology, nottheonion, and dcstudios—Stanford’s race-altering image edits, fabricated Google Earth satellite images, and Meta nudify-app ads.

Pinterest: A visual-only venue without engagement metrics. Of the 50 collected pins, thumbnails with brand logos for closed-source tools—Veo3, Kling AI, Luma Dream Machine, Gemini Omni, and others—were overwhelmingly dominant. Only one image focused on open source (Stability AI); there were virtually none centered on ComfyUI, LoRA, or Chinese OSS models. Pinterest also has a distinct standalone category of infographics on “how to tell whether an image is AI-generated or real.”

What to watch

Recommendations

  • Check the ComfyUI ecosystems around Qwen-Image-2.1 and Minimax H3 weekly, since multiple platforms independently identified them as today’s leading open models.
  • For the next X collection, stop relying on regional trends and instead search direct English and Japanese topic keywords such as “image generation AI,” “Stable Diffusion,” and “Midjourney.”
  • Track pricing and feature competition among closed video-generation players after Sora’s shutdown—Veo, Kling, Grok, Runway, and Seedance—as the market consolidates.
  • Treat Pinterest as a reference for the visual language currently in use rather than a trend-measurement source, because save and like counts are unavailable.
  • Continue monitoring the distrust of AI-generated content found across Reddit, Lemmy, and Pinterest, since it maps directly to the political temperature around regulation such as mandatory watermarks.
  • When recollecting Reddit data, use separate search terms for “open source” and “closed source” to increase volume toward the brief’s completion criterion of 20 analyzed items per platform.

Data quality

X was effectively a data-collection failure: geolocation errors and trend-term-driven searches produced 0 topical posts out of 40. Bluesky’s official search API returned 403, leaving the data skewed toward articles from a single gen-ai.news account. Pinterest did not include engagement metrics such as saves and likes, preventing popularity measurement, while YouTube did not expose many view counts or channel names. Lemmy’s open-source information is concentrated in essentially one community and one or two posters, and Reddit also fell short of the 20-thread completion threshold with just 12 threads from a single search term.

What people say
  • Thread 1 (r/generativeAI, 10 points, 2026-09-23) — On making long-form AI video: u/kaboom-o lays out the actual current pipeline — "Scripts become a shot list, then a pile of 5–15s clips, then an edit... For clips that need to hold a face longer, Seedance 2.5 (up to ~30s, native audio)... Cheap motion drafts... Grok Imagine Video at 480p, 5s. Photoreal keepers: Gemini Omni Flash." — https://www.reddit.com/r/generativeAI/comments/1wog53q/
  • Thread 1 — u/AlfieSchmalfie shows the real cost of a finished piece: "Just completed a 12 minute video. 148 shots... 8 weeks of editing. Budget of about $1,000AUD excluding subscriptions to Runway and ElevenLabs... It was worth it."

  • Thread 11 (r/StableDiffusion, 1 point, 2026-09-25) — The most technical open-source rundown of the batch: consensus is the field just moved from Z-Image Turbo to Krea 2 for text-to-image ("Instead of z image it's now kre2... Krea2 does everything z image could but better" — u/Sirmckhalifa5566), Qwen-Image 2.1 for editing, and Minimax H3 leading video, with u/Cultural-Broccoli-41 flagging SenseNova-U1.5 as a strong Apache-2.0-licensed alternative already wired into ComfyUI. — https://www.reddit.com/r/StableDiffusion/comments/1wpr4uf/
  • Thread 10 (r/ChaiUnofficial, 5 points, 2026-09-21) — Paying ("ultra") users are unhappy with a bolted-on image/video generator: u/ConsistentWolf2076: "the generating of images and videos should've been free. The images and videos aren't even all that good either. I can draw better than generate images lol." — https://www.reddit.com/r/ChaiUnofficial/comments/1wlxxa3/
Signals
  • Rising: naming/version churn is fast and casually tracked by practitioners — Z-Image Turbo was displaced by Krea 2, and Minimax H3 is repeatedly named the current best for video (threads 1, 9, 11) with near-zero disagreement among the technical crowd. SenseNova-U1.5's Apache-2.0 license and native ComfyUI support (thread 11) is the one clearly open-source data point getting genuine enthusiasm.
  • Rising: aggregator/multi-model platforms (Luma Agents, OneOver, Magnific AI/Fal/Krea) are being recommended over single-model subscriptions, because people are hopping models mid-project (threads 1, 5).
  • Dismissed / backlash: outside the tool-focused subs, every appearance of AI-generated imagery in a real-world context reads as scandal, not innovation — a science-competition win (labrats, two threads, 1,104 + 419 points), a fired CEO (594 points), real-estate photo fraud (27,008 points), and a runaway watermark-law poll (13,925 comments). The technical subs treat the same tools neutrally; general subs treat them as a trust problem.
  • Surprised: the two Nikon Small World threads generated far more engagement and moral energy (1,104 and 419 points, 134 and 90 comments) than any actual "which model is best" thread — the highest-scoring generativeAI/StableDiffusion tool thread topped out at 13 points. On Reddit right now, "AI video did something dishonest" outdraws "AI video does something new."
  • Disagreement: in thread 4, some commenters call any use of AI in scientific imaging outright fraud ("Anyone who alter the actual blot is a fraud" — original poster) while others (u/thezfisher, 44 pts) argue the whole field of image processing has always been manipulated and this is just a visibility problem: "no image is truly trustworthy nowadays unless they show their LUT adjustments."
Limits
  • Only one search term — "Image and Video Generation AI News" — was run against Reddit; it returned 12 threads, short of the ~20 the completion criteria call for, and no separate searches were made for "open source" vs "closed source" angles specifically, so this collection likely undercounts dedicated model-release discussion (e.g. no threads from r/StableDiffusion beyond one, nothing from r/MachineLearning, r/midjourney, r/OpenAI, or r/aivideo).
  • The single most on-topic technical thread (r/StableDiffusion, thread 11) had only 1 upvote and 20 comments — good content, but it suggests the search term surfaced controversy-driven virality more than it surfaced the technical community's own discussion venues.
  • No thread in this set directly names a closed-source model release, pricing change, or company announcement (e.g. no Midjourney, Sora, Veo, or Runway product-launch thread) — the closed-source signal here is indirect, coming through tool mentions inside recommendation threads rather than dedicated news threads.
  • Cannot independently verify any of these numbers or re-browse Reddit — this file is built entirely from output/reddit.threads.md, since Reddit refuses WebFetch and blocks search-result pages directly.

None relates to developments in closed-source or open-source image/video generation AI, such as new model announcements, tool updates, or comparison discussions.

Signals
  • The search terms were off-topic: the terms used (“$SONG,” “#chance,” “#sweepstakes,” “#giveaways,” “#gaming,” “Lando,” “Yugoslavia,” “Croats,” “Italy,” “Taylor”) are unrelated to image/video generation AI. They appear to have been copied directly from X Explore trends, with the session region set to Croatia. The resulting collection was heavily skewed toward cryptocurrency, giveaway spam, F1 fandom, Balkan-history debate, travel photography, and Taylor Swift, with no trace of AI news.
  • Of 40 posts, zero contained keywords such as “AI,” “image generation,” “video generation,” “Midjourney,” “Stable Diffusion,” or “Sora.”
  • There were no even tangentially AI-related posts, so forcing a connection would be inappropriate.
Limits
  • X Explore’s trend list was geolocated to Croatia based on this session’s connection origin. Ranks 1–4, 8, and 10 were marked “Trending in Croatia”; rank 5 was “Gaming,” rank 6 “Motorsport,” rank 7 “Politics,” and rank 9 “Sports.” These were regional Croatian trends, not global trends and certainly not AI-industry trends.
  • The 10 actual search terms ($SONG, #chance, #sweepstakes, #giveaways, #gaming, Lando, Yugoslavia, Croats, Italy, Taylor) appear to have been the worker’s direct reuse of Explore trends, but none relates to image-generation or video-generation AI. No recollection was performed using topical terms such as “image generation AI,” “video generation AI,” “Stable Diffusion,” “Midjourney,” or “Sora.”
  • The volume criterion of analyzing about 20 posts was met in raw count (40), but with 0 topical posts, the requirement for at least 10 insights each on closed and open source cannot be met from X data.
  • There was no means within this stage to access X beyond the already collected files (output/x.posts.md, output/x.posts.json), so recollecting with relevant search terms was outside the available authority.

  11. Exciting AI Updates Weekly — September 25, 2026
    — creator "Lev Selector" — Sept 25, 2026 —
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyZHPCNd8jI
Weekly general-AI roundup that folds in image/video-gen releases
(GPT Image 2.5, Qwen-Image-2.1) alongside broader AI news.

Signals
  • Open-weight models are closing the gap fast, and saying so out loud.
Multiple video titles this run explicitly frame Alibaba's 7B
Qwen-Image-2.1 as beating or matching Google's much larger Nano Banana
2.0 (#3, #4) — the "small open model beats big closed model" framing is
    now a recurring hook, not a one-off.
  • Open-source video is racing on local-run speed, not just quality.
LTX-2.5 (#5, #6) and the Wan lineage (#7, #8) are covered mainly through
ComfyUI setup/speed-test videos, not glossy trailers — the audience
cares about running it on their own GPU.
  • Closed-source video is consolidating. OpenAI is shutting down the
entire Sora 2 API on Sept 24, 2026 (confirmed via OpenAI's own help
center and multiple outlets, though no dedicated YouTube reaction video
turned up in this run — see Limits), while Alibaba's Wan 3.0 reportedly
passed Sora in global video-model rankings around the same time
(VentureBeat). The closed-source video race is shrinking to
    Veo/Kling/Grok/Runway/Seedance.
  • Closed-source image leaders ship on a monthly/point-release cadence.
    Midjourney's V8 → V8.1 → V8.2 (#9) and OpenAI's GPT Image 2.0 → 2.5
(#1, #2) both show frequent, incremental point releases rather than
big-bang versions — coverage channels have adapted with recurring
    monthly "update" video formats.
  • Wan 3.0 is a partial signal, not a clean open-source win — it's
    currently API/public-beta only (#7, #8), unlike the open-weight Wan 2.x
line, so it reads as Alibaba hedging between open and closed
    distribution.
Limits
  • View counts and subscriber counts could not be retrieved. WebFetch
    on both youtube.com/watch?v=... and youtube.com/results?search_query=...
pages returned only YouTube's static footer/legal boilerplate — the
view/subscriber numbers live in JS-rendered ytInitialData, which never
reached the fetched content. WebSearch snippets also did not carry this
data. Every "views"/"subscribers" figure was therefore left out rather
    than guessed.
  • Several channel names could not be confirmed. Where WebSearch
snippets didn't name a creator, entries above are marked "channel not
    identified" rather than guessed.
  • No dedicated YouTube video surfaced specifically reacting to the Sora
    2 API shutdown
(confirmed for Sept 24, 2026 via non-YouTube sources)
despite several targeted searches — mentioned in Signals as context but
not counted as a YouTube finding.
  • Search coverage leaned on Google's indexed snippets of YouTube rather
than the live YouTube search UI, since the UI itself wasn't fetchable —
this likely under-represents very recent (last few days) uploads that
    Google hasn't fully indexed yet.

Open-source developments
  1. Alibaba releases Qwen-Image-2.1 as open weights — @sungkim.bsky.social, 2026-09-20, 👍82 🔁10 💬4. Described as “a lightweight 7B architecture combining generation and editing, with significantly faster multi-image-input inference.”
  2. A detailed explanation of the same model — gen-ai.news, 2026-09-20. “A 7B open-weight image-generation model that runs on consumer GPUs, supports transparent layers, accepts up to 10 reference images at once, and claims benchmark parity with large closed models.”
  3. SkyReels V1, the first open-source foundation video model focused on people — @luok.ai, 2025-02-18, 👍3 🔁1. It was fine-tuned from HunyuanVideo on over 10 million video clips and is described as capturing 33 facial expressions and more than 400 motions.
  4. SkyReels-A2, a controllable video-generation framework from text + images — @adinayakup.bsky.social, 2025-04-04, 👍3 🔁2. Presented as an open framework by Skywork and KunLun.
  5. Japanese beta-test impressions of HunyuanVideo — @dahara1.bsky.social, 2025-03-06. The user posted anime-style lip-sync results after gaining the ability to generate video with audio from a single image (I2V).
Signals
  • Closed-source news density was high in late September: Runway, Adobe, Midjourney, OpenAI, Meta, ByteDance, and Pinterest released an announcement, acquisition, or policy change almost daily across the ten days from 2026-09-18 to 09-27, and Bluesky AI-news accounts followed suit.
  • A sense that “video generation is not profitable”: Sora’s shutdown (3,571 likes) is treated as a clear turning point, and analysis like richargh.de’s view that “the unit economics are bad” appears to be becoming shared community sentiment.
  • Alibaba’s Qwen line has a substantial open-source image-generation presence: Qwen-Image-2.1 was covered on the same day by both an individual account (sungkim.bsky.social) and a news account (gen-ai.news). Its 82 likes were the strongest response among individual posts found in this stage. The main discussion hook is the claim that a lightweight 7B model can rival large closed models.
  • Individual open-source video-generation posts are scarce and old: Posts about SkyReels and HunyuanVideo are from early 2025. No meaningful individual Bluesky posts were found about Wan 2.7, LTX-2.3, or FLUX.2 as of September 2026.
  • The industry-news ecosystem has some self-correction: In a 2026-09-23 post, gen-ai.news explicitly stated that neither “GPT-6” nor “Astra” exists, and it would not write a post about an article containing fabricated product names, showing a stated commitment to source verification. However, the same account’s 2026-09-21 post described Higgsfield AI adding features quickly using GPT-4o and OpenAI’s “Astra” framework, contradicting its later statement that Astra does not exist. One claim is likely wrong, so Astra-related claims should not be accepted at face value.
Limits
  • Bluesky’s official search API (app.bsky.feed.searchPosts) consistently returned 403 Forbidden during this session, preventing comprehensive keyword-based research. Posts and accounts were instead found through Web search (site:bsky.app), then their text, dates, and like counts were corroborated directly using app.bsky.feed.getPostThread / app.bsky.feed.getAuthorFeed (public, unauthenticated APIs).
  • Bluesky post pages themselves (JS-rendered) did not expose text or numbers through WebFetch; they only showed the author handle. All figures are limited to those obtained through the APIs above.
  • No meaningful recent individual posts were found about open-source image/video models that should be active in September 2026, including FLUX.2, Wan 2.7, LTX-2.3, and shared ComfyUI workflows. Direct checks of relevant handles (fluxkontext.bsky.social, wagahai-ai.bsky.social, aoi68k.bsky.social, etc.) showed feeds largely stopping in early 2025 and not reflecting current topics.
  • Against the completion criterion of analyzing about 20 posts, only 16 posts had text and figures verified (11 closed-source, 5 open-source). The sample is skewed toward gen-ai.news and is thin in terms of naturally occurring discussion among multiple individual users.
  • Several Japanese-community accounts using AI illustration and AI video tags were found, but their content was old (2024–2025) or limited to general artwork posts with no news value, so it was not included as current insight for this topic.

  6. EA partners with the company behind Stable Diffusion (Stability AI) to make games with AI — !«メールアドレス», score 2, 2025-10-25. https://mander.xyz/post/40602787
  7. A meme post mocking “OpenAI shutting down the AI-slop video-generation model Sora” — !«メールアドレス», score 0, 2026-03-25. It sarcastically references the real news of the Sora API shutdown. https://lemmus.org/post/21091066
Signals
  • The open-source side is highly concentrated: Almost all development-oriented posts found came from a single community, !«メールアドレス», and almost entirely from one poster (Even_Adder) plus instance administrator db0. Nearly every post had 0 comments, making it more like a feed of new GitHub/HuggingFace links than a discussion venue.
  • Current development centers on Qwen-Image-2.1 for images and MiniMax H3 for video: Most tool posts in the past two weeks were adapters, LoRAs, and ComfyUI nodes for those two models. Reddit data (output/reddit.md) also explicitly named Qwen-Image 2.1 for editing and Minimax H3 for video as the current leaders, providing cross-platform support.
  • Closed-source topics appear only through controversy and ethics, not feature news: Midjourney, Google, Meta, and DC posts all report copyright infringement, deepfakes, impersonation, or fabrication rather than new product features. Lemmy has no community that specializes in tracking technical news about new models such as Sora, Veo, Kling, or Grok Imagine.
  • !fuck_ai is not specifically about image/video generation AI despite its scale: Individual posts can reach dozens to over 800 likes, but the focus is runaway text-LLM agents (“Claude Code deleted 48,000 files in 103 seconds,” “an OpenAI agent modified a government website”). Image/video-generation discussion is a minority.
  • Direct searches for major closed-source product names were almost completely empty: Searches for “Kling AI,” “Veo 3,” “Adobe Firefly,” “Nano Banana,” and “Grok Imagine” yielded mostly irrelevant results, with virtually no dedicated posts or discussions bearing these product names on Lemmy.
Limits
  • Lemmy’s search function (lemmy.world API search and on-site Web search) is imprecise and returns many irrelevant posts; for example, searching “Kling AI” can return a German rail-discount thread. Therefore, failing to find a topic cannot conclusively mean it was not discussed.
  • Open-source information depends on essentially one community and one or two accounts. Similar communities on other instances (lemmy.ml, lemm.ee, etc.) had few subscribers and little visible activity.
  • No dedicated hub was found for closed-source topics. The data had to be assembled from isolated posts in broad communities such as technology, nottheonion, games, dcstudios, and googlepixel, so coverage is low.
  • More than 40 posts were opened during the collection through community lists and search results (20 new stable_diffusion posts plus many hits from other searches), meeting the raw “about 20” criterion, but only very few had active comment discussions; most had nearly 0 comments.
  • Lemmy as a whole remains small in users and post volume, making it much less substantial than Reddit, X, or Bluesky for tracking the latest image/video-generation AI news.

Pinterest

Pinterest — Image and Video Generation AI News

Of the 50 collected pins (pinterest.pins.md, manifest.json), 26 images were opened and visually inspected. The collection used a single unclassified query: "Image and Video Generation AI News".

Visual themes
  • A black-background, neon-blue/purple “AI” aesthetic dominates: glowing robot hands and faces, luminous circuit patterns, and AI logo typography recur repeatedly. This is the visual tone across much of the collection [1, 7, 8, 20, 37, 38, 40].
  • White humanoid robots (smooth finishes, blue glowing eyes/joints) are frequently used as personified icons for “AI” [8, 20, 37, 38, 40]. These stock-style illustrations vastly outnumber actual product UI screenshots.
  • Warning and comparison layouts saying “this is AI-generated” form a major category: fake-detection stamps, split Human/AI comparisons, and screenshots of AI-generated newscaster-style video stand out—content that teaches “how to tell” or plays on distrust [3, 32, 39, 42, 43, 44, 45, 48].
  • Tool-comparison and ranking infographics in tall list UIs: many guides arrange tool logos into choices such as “Best Quality vs Best Free” and “22 Best & Free AI Video Generators” [7, 47]. Learning-roadmap images are in the same family [34].
  • Thumbnails foregrounding major closed-source brand logos and product names: Google Gemini/Omni, Veo3, Kling AI, Luma Dream Machine, and OpenAI logos are placed prominently [1, 9, 13, 19, 31, 33, 47]. By contrast, images centered on open-source tools (Stable Diffusion, ComfyUI, LoRA, etc.) were nearly absent; the one Stability AI image [49] is a collage of product material rather than an actual workflow screen.
  • Demos converting one source image into multiple styles: one comparison grid transforms the same portrait into versions made of wood blocks, origami, LEGO, and flowers, functioning as a visual demonstration of image-editing AI capability [2].
  • Close-up eyes and “indistinguishable from real” motifs: Luma Dream Machine’s eye close-up [33] and AI/human macro comparisons [43] use visual language emphasizing realism.
  • News framing through combinations of real corporate logos and government documents: Google sign photography [28] and document-like imagery tied to New York State legislation [18] are used with stock photos and text overlays to create a news-roundup format.
Notable pins
  • [1] "AI News: Anthropic Leak Shows Us The Future of AI..." — A standard YouTube thumbnail composition of “surprised face + big-tech logos (OpenAI/Google/Microsoft).” It is essentially the template for AI-news video content.
  • [2] "Google announces ultra-high quality video..." (actually an image-transformation demo grid) — A continuous comparison transforming a source into wood carving, origami, LEGO, and floral craft styles. A representative visual demonstration of image-editing AI’s expressive range.
  • [9] "Veo 3 Image-to-Video: Fast Generation & Native Audio via Gemini API" — Promotes fast video generation and native audio with Veo3 through the Gemini API. Promotional material for current closed-source functionality.
  • [13] "Kling.ai AI-Powered Text-to-Video Generation" — A tall “My Top Picks” pin recommending Kling AI. It indicates strong recognition of the Chinese closed-source video-generation tool.
  • [19] "Google's Gemini Omni Turns Anything Into Video" — A branding image compressing multimodal integration (image, audio, and text → video) into one icon.
  • [31] "'Amuse 3.0', an AI art creation tool that includes..." — A photorealistic portrait for an AMD-backed locally run image-generation tool. One of the few examples promoting on-device generation.
  • [32] "AI news videos blur line between real and fake reports" — A still of an AI-generated reporter in an NBC News-style presentation with an “AI GENERATED” watermark. It symbolizes concern about generative-AI misuse in news.
  • [44] "AI News Anchors & Creator-Led Coverage Take Over U.S. Media!" — A composited overhead illustration of a newsroom, presented as news about the rise of AI anchors and creator-led reporting.
  • [47] "22 Best & Free AI Video Generators in 2026" — An infographic ranking 22 tools including Kling, Hailuo, Runway, Pika, and Luma. A typical piece of tool-selection content emphasizing free tiers.
  • [49] "Stability AI's Stable Diffusion Maker Can Now Build AI Generative Video" — A Stability AI-related collage of an office scene, a code screen, and portrait-generation examples. One of the rare open-source-adjacent examples found, though it does not show a specific UI or model name.
Signals
  • Pinterest is now close to all closed-source video generation: Commercial API-based names such as Veo3/Gemini Omni, Kling AI, Luma Dream Machine, and Runway repeatedly appear with logos. Even tool-comparison infographics [7, 47] overwhelmingly list closed-source SaaS tools; there may be a “free/open” axis, but not an “open source and self-hosted” context.
  • Distrust of AI-generated content and demand for ways to identify it are especially strong on Pinterest: fake detection, news misuse, and Human or AI? comparison images form an independent genre. Unlike technical discussions on Reddit and news sites, Pinterest consumes this as educational infographic content.
  • Open-source-specific topics—ComfyUI, LoRA, Chinese OSS models such as Wan/HunyuanVideo, and licensing discussions—are nearly absent. Only one Stability AI-related item was found, with no concrete workflow screens or community-created work.
  • Engagement metrics such as saves and likes were absent from the collected data, so the actual popularity of individual pins cannot be judged from images alone.
Limits
  • Only 26 of the 50 pins were opened and visually checked; the remaining 24 were reviewed only through the title list in pinterest.pins.md.
  • Pinterest collection had already been performed by a worker, so search queries could not be adjusted directly. Results came from a single English query; no Japanese query or focused re-search for “open source” and “closed source” was possible.
  • Because only still images were collected, actual moving generation results could not be inspected despite the focus on video-generation AI; conclusions are limited to inferences from thumbnails and promotional images.
  • Engagement metrics such as saves and comments were not included, so popularity and virality cannot be evaluated.

Recommended actions

  • Check the ComfyUI ecosystems around Qwen-Image-2.1 and Minimax H3 weekly.
  • Stop relying on regional trends for X collection and search again using direct image/video-generation AI keywords.
  • Follow the reshuffling of closed video-generation players—Veo, Kling, Grok, Runway, and Seedance—after Sora’s shutdown.
  • Treat Pinterest as reference material for visual language, since popularity metrics are unavailable.
  • Continue monitoring the spread of distrust toward AI-generated content and the debate around mandatory watermarking.

Data quality notes

X had 0 relevant posts because of incorrect geolocation and trend-term-driven searching; Bluesky’s search API returned 403 and the sample was skewed toward articles from one account; Pinterest lacked engagement metrics; YouTube view counts could not be retrieved; Lemmy’s open-source information was concentrated in essentially one community; and Reddit reached only 12 threads, below the completion criterion of 20.
