KEN’S CAT LOG

Daily Google Play Report 2026-09-01

Today's strongest signals are the simultaneous multi-country appearances of “watch faces” and “AI video generation”: Concentric - Pixel Watch Face debuted at #1 in DE watch-face/free and #22 in the US, while XPhoto: AI Video Generator appeared on the same day at #1 in JP personalization/grossing and #6 in the US. Meanwhile, churn is almost entirely concentrated in the bottom tier (held 81% · new 11%).

1. New Entries

The strongest signal is simultaneous entry in multiple countries on the same day. Concentric - Pixel Watch Face appeared at #1 in DE watch-face/free and #22 in the US, while also climbing to #7 (+15) in HR. XPhoto: AI Video Generator debuted directly in the top grossing ranks at #1 in JP personalization/grossing and #6 in the US. Other multi-country entries include FotMob in android-wear/free at DE #39, HR #40, and JP #45; HERE WeGo in maps/free at US #26 and GB #33; and WalkFit in health/free at US #28 and GB #30. High-ranking single-country entries included USB Audio Player PRO (JP music/paid #1), Arar (KR comics/paid #1), GIMP (US art/paid #4), and LumaFusion (US video/paid #4).

2. Sharp Rise Since the Baseline

The baseline date, 2026-08-26, was only six days ago and is simply the oldest date in the archive (not yet a full month of data). The largest cluster was HR finance/grossing, where TradingView rose to #1 (+36), Splitwise to #5 (+38), and Kraken to #7 (+22), while Investing.com #2, Finanzguru #3, and YNAB #4—absent on the baseline date—entered the top ranks. In JP, Pokémon TCG Pocket reached #13 in game/grossing (+32), Puzzle & Dragons reached #4 (+20), and two Rakuten TV apps plus Rakuten Household Budget rose by +25 to +27. Paid games in the US/KR/JP also climbed together: Hero Siege #9 (+30), Afterplace #20 (+23), and Tiny Terraces #6 (+22).

3. By Tier

top (ranks 1–10) was almost fixed, with held 95%, new 1%, and average movement of 0.6; mid was similarly stable at held 92% and |Δ|1.7. Movement occurred in the bottom tier (ranks 31–45), with held 81%, new 11%, and |Δ|2.2. In other words, today's new entries are occurring at the edge of the top 45, while the slots at the top remain unchanged. Developer names are entirely missing, so concentration among top developers cannot be assessed.

4. By Country

The US had the most new entries at 135, with 89/89 comparable charts and no missing data. It was followed by HR 107, JP 105, DE 102, GB 91, and KR 83. Top-10 retention was nearly identical across markets at 94–96%. The common pattern was X and Canva at #1 in all six countries, while Duolingo, Tinder, WhatsApp, and Spotify were also top-10 in every market. Local movement was concentrated in JP (the Rakuten ecosystem and ahamo) and KR (Emart24, Berriz, and Yeolnayo).

5. By Category

The most dynamic categories were watch-face (25 new entries across 9 charts, top-10 held 88%) and personalization (34 new entries, held 90%). They were followed by tools 31, game 27, lifestyle 27, and video-players 26. Conversely, weather was nearly static with 5 new entries and held 97%; libraries-and-demo had 6 new entries and held 99%; and auto-and-vehicles held 99%.

Key Findings

1. Concentric - Pixel Watch Face debuted on the same day at DE #1 / US #22, while rising +15 to #7 in HR

It entered watch-face/free in two countries on the same day, immediately taking first place in DE. In HR, an existing listing rose to #7 (+15), indicating broad momentum rather than an isolated swap. Watch faces were today's biggest source of churn and the theme with the most immediate potential for production.

Confidence: High

2. XPhoto: AI Video Generator debuted on the same day at JP personalization/grossing #1 and US #6

Its entry into a grossing chart—not a free chart—and specifically at #1 in JP is significant. Edge Lighting - Borderlight also debuted at #5 in the same JP personalization/grossing chart, showing that this ranking itself is changing today. This suggests that monetization paths for AI video generation are working in Japan.

Confidence: High

3. HR finance/grossing was broadly reshuffled in six days: 6 of the top 7 apps rose or were new

TradingView #1 (+36), Splitwise #5 (+38), and Kraken #7 (+22) rose sharply from the 2026-08-26 baseline, while Investing.com #2, Finanzguru #3, and YNAB #4 entered the top 20 after being absent on the baseline date. This is not a single-app story but a category-wide reshuffle, making HR's paid finance space relatively accessible right now.

Confidence: High

4. IPTV players rose simultaneously across four markets (US #4 new; DE/HR/GB entered single digits after being absent on the baseline date)

IPTV Online Player: Live TV debuted at #4 in US video-players/free, while differently packaged apps with the same name reached DE #3, HR #3, and GB #5 after being absent on 2026-08-26. Pro IPTV also rose to GB #14 (+31) and DE #10 (+27). Demand for live TV viewing has spread across Western markets in six days.

Confidence: High

5. Churn is concentrated in ranks 31–45: bottom new 11%, top new 1%

top (1–10) had held 95% and average movement 0.6, while mid (11–30) had held 92% and 1.7; bottom (31–45) had held 81%, new 11%, and 2.2. If targeting a new entry, the strategy should not assume a direct challenge to the top ranks; it should first aim to enter the top 45 and create a path upward into mid. Since developer information is entirely missing, today's data cannot determine whether a small number of developers dominate the top tier.

Confidence: High

6. watch-face had the most churn (25 new entries across 9 charts, top-10 held 88%); in GB, paid apps appeared in both watch-face and personalization

watch-face had the lowest retention of any category at 88%. In GB, Paper of Time debuted on the same day at watch-face/paid #5 and personalization/paid #6, while Modern Beige Analog debuted at #6 and #7 respectively, meaning paid watch faces can gain exposure in two categories at once. Also notable: Radar in JP #5 and KR #41, SWF1 in US #23 and HR #41, and Military F01 in GB #22 and US #44—multiple titles with watchfacestudio-style package names appeared together on the same day (developer names are missing, so a shared provider has not been confirmed).

Confidence: Medium

7. Manga/webtoon reader apps debuted across four countries on the same day (comics: 13 new entries, held 94%)

Kuroba appeared at GB #17 and US #30, QToon at HR #25 and US #35, and StoryToon debuted at DE #12, while the existing Kuroba also rose to DE #10 (+14). In KR, Arar entered at comics/paid #1. Both free readers and paid viewers moved at the same time, leaving broad room for new entries in reading apps today.

Confidence: High

8. AI health and AI language learning rose in parallel across English-speaking markets, HR, and KR

AI Health Tracker: BP & Blood recorded some of the day's largest day-over-day gains, reaching US #10 (+29) and GB #5 (+20). In language learning, Fluzy rose to HR #4 (+26) and GB #10 (+18), while LingQuiz reached KR #17 (+22). Health tracking and language learning are two areas where “AI” positioning is having a short-term ranking effect; education has 26 new entries and held 97%, so the top remains firm but the middle ranks offer room for growth.

Confidence: High

9. JP's Rakuten ecosystem rose as a group, while KR's local daily-life and fandom apps moved

In JP, two Rakuten TV apps (#16 +27 / #13 +25), Rakuten Household Budget #7 (+25), Rakuten Music #9 (+22), and ahamo #8 (+21) all climbed. In KR, Emart24 #10 (+27), Berriz newly entered social/free #14 with +25, and Family GPS Locator #13 plus Yeolnayo #15 newly entered parenting/grossing. Both markets are moving on local context rather than globally shared hits.

Confidence: High

10. Established #1 apps remain fixed, while similarly named apps take slots just below them

X and Canva were #1 in all six countries, while Duolingo, Tinder, WhatsApp, and Spotify were top-10 in every market, leaving the upper ranks unchanged today. Meanwhile, in personalization, the established Emoji Battery Icon Customize is top-10 in six markets, while the similarly named Emoji Battery: Status Bar Icon debuted at HR #4 and US #34, and rose to DE #13 (+14) and GB #19 (+13). Slots remain available beneath searches for established demand terms.

Confidence: Medium

11. Static categories: weather had 5 new entries, libraries-and-demo 6, and auto-and-vehicles held 99%

weather (12 charts, 5 new entries, held 97%), libraries-and-demo (8 charts, 6 new entries, held 99%), and auto-and-vehicles (13 charts, 13 new entries, held 99%) were almost unchanged today. They are low-priority targets for short-term, trend-driven production, but may instead be areas for pursuing long-term established positions.

Confidence: High

Recommended Actions

  • Begin a watch-face project today: watch-face had the lowest top-10 retention of any category at 88%, with 25 new entries. Review Concentric at DE #1, Radar at JP #5, and GB's two paid apps (Paper of Time / Modern Beige Analog) on actual devices, then design with distribution in both watch-face and personalization categories in mind.
  • Validate paid AI video-generation funnels in JP and the US: XPhoto debuted on the same day at JP personalization/grossing #1 and US #6, while Edge Lighting also appeared at JP #5. Since the movement is in grossing charts rather than free AI editing, prioritize research into pricing and subscription positioning.
  • Track HR finance/grossing for one week: alongside TradingView #1 (+36) and Splitwise #5 (+38), Investing.com #2, Finanzguru #3, and YNAB #4 entered after being absent on the baseline date. The top ranks changed in six days, so use the next one or two collections to confirm whether the pattern is repeatable.
  • Design entry strategies around the 31–45 range: bottom had new 11% and held 81%, compared with top at new 1% and held 95%. Today's data does not support concepts that assume a direct disruption of the top ranks.
  • Close collection gaps first: 181 charts were not collected, 28 fetches failed, 5 runs partially completed, and 34 charts were not comparable. In particular, degradation in DE and GB TOP_PAID / TOP_GROSSING must be resolved before continuing paid/grossing analysis. Developer is also missing in 82931 records, so developer-name enrichment through matching with another source should be part of the next revision.
  • Clearly define how the baseline is used: 2026-08-26 is the oldest archived date and only six days ago. Until a full month of data accumulates, share this internally as “vs. baseline” rather than “monthly” to prevent misinterpretation.

Data Quality Notes

Today's aggregation covers 449 charts / 16579 rows; of the 630 charts expected by configuration, 181 could not be collected (a missing-data rate of about 30%). Of the 449 charts, 415 could be compared with the previous run on 2026-08-31; the remaining 34 had no previous collection, so neither “new entry” nor “movement” was calculated for them. Do not interpret rows from non-comparable charts as new entries. By market, only 63 of 75 KR charts and 59 of 64 DE charts were comparable, making the counts of new entries in KR and DE (83 and 102) likely underestimates relative to other markets. In terms of quality, 5 recent runs were partially completed and 28 fetches failed, with degraded sources concentrated in TOP_GROSSING and TOP_PAID (for DE and GB, this affects paid and grossing charts in nearly all categories). Therefore, an apparent lack of new entries in paid/grossing charts may be caused by missing collection data. For attributes, developer is missing in 82931 records, ratingCount in 82931, and rating in 4907, so developer-level concentration analysis and judgments using rating counts are not valid today. Finally, the monthly baseline date, 2026-08-26, is merely the oldest archived collection date and only six days old; the “monthly rise” discussed in this report is effectively six days of change.
