Daily Google Play Report 2026-09-02
HR's android-tools/TOP_GROSSING saw a complete reshuffle, with new entries from #6 through #16. This alone explains the category's 51 new entries and 91% top-10 retention rate (the lowest of any category). Meanwhile, the simultaneous multi-country emergence of AI photo/video generation and IPTV/short-drama apps is today's most reproducible trend signal.
1. New Entries
Eleven apps entered charts in two countries on the same day. The themes are clear: AI images and video (AI Photo Generator: Muselab AI at KR #44 / GB #45, Dance AI at HR #43 / US #44, and Gallery at US #36 / JP #41), video players (Video Player: HD Play at US #35 / DE #40 and Video Player All Format at GB #43 / US #45), and AI assistants (Chatbot App at GB #45 / JP #45). All are emerging from the lower ranks and need to be reconfirmed from tomorrow onward. On a single chart, android-tools/TOP_GROSSING in HR showed an anomalous reshuffle, with new entries occupying #6 through #16.
2. Sharp Monthly Gains
The baseline date, 2026-08-26, is the oldest date in the archive—just seven days ago. Note that this is not a period that can truly be called "monthly." The largest gains were in HR's finance/grossing chart: Splitwise at #5 (+38) and TradingView at #1 (+36), while Investing.com at #2, Finanzguru at #3, and YNAB at #4 were absent on the baseline date. In JP, Pokémon TCG Pocket recovered to grossing #13 (+32), while Rakuten-related apps rose together (Household Account Book #6 +26 and Rakuten TV #13 +25).
3. By Tier
top (1–10) was nearly frozen, with 96% retention, 0% new entries, and average movement of 0.4. mid was 93%/1%/1.3, while bottom (31–45) was 86%/8%/1.7, meaning activity is limited to the tail. Based on today's data, there is no room for initiatives targeting the head.
4. By Country
top-10 retention rates were broadly flat at 94–97%, but new entries were led by HR with 109, followed by US with 91 and JP with 84. X and Canva ranked #1 in all six countries, while WhatsApp, ChatGPT, Duolingo, and Tinder also ranked highly across markets, with the upper tier occupied by shared global players. Differences appear on the local side (KR's 이마트24 at #10 +27 and JP's EDION App at #17 +27).
5. By Category
The most active category was android-tools (51 new entries, 91% retention), followed by android-sports (23, 93%), android-game (23, 94%), and android-video-players (23, 96%). By contrast, android-communication had 100% retention, while android-libraries-and-demo was static with just three new entries.
Key Findings
1. Complete reshuffle in HR's android-tools/TOP_GROSSING, with new entries from #6 through #16
Level plus #6, SmoothTrack #7, Automatic Call Recorder PRO #8, Ear Booster Pro #9, ASTM Tables #10, Spy Camera Detector #11, Mag.it Pro #12, Push Latte #13, Croatian Language Keyboard #14, TaxiRadar Zagreb #15, and Sensors Kinetics Pro #16 all entered simultaneously, while Call Recorder - Cube ACR climbed to #5 (+37). android-tools' 51 new entries and 91% top-10 retention rate—the lowest of all categories—can be explained almost entirely by this one chart. Rather than reflecting the individual strength of these apps, this likely indicates a reconfiguration of HR's paid tools chart, and it becomes a prerequisite for interpreting other HR metrics.
Confidence: High
2. Three AI image and video generation apps entered two countries each on the same day
AI Photo Generator: Muselab AI entered android-photography/free simultaneously at KR #44 / GB #45, Dance AI: Dance Video Maker at HR #43 / US #44, and Gallery at US #36 / JP #41. In addition, existing apps also rose: the same Muselab AI reached #26 (+17) in DE, and Pix Editor: AI Photo Maker reached #28 (+16) in US. This is not a one-country fluke, but a sign that demand for AI photo-editing apps is emerging across multiple markets at once—making it the most reproducible area for planning.
Confidence: High
3. IPTV / video players are growing through both new entries and seven-day gains
Video Player: HD Play (US #35 / DE #40) and Video Player All Format (GB #43 / US #45) entered two countries on the same day. In addition, Pro IPTV: Online & Live Player reached GB #18 (+27) and DE #11 (+26), while IPTV Online Player: Live TV entered the upper ranks at HR #3 and DE #5 after being absent on the baseline date. android-video-players, with 23 new entries, is among the most active groups. General-purpose players and IPTV are different products, but both are rising simultaneously in Europe and consistently serve demand for free viewing.
Confidence: High
4. HR's finance/grossing top five has been almost completely reshuffled since the baseline date
TradingView #1 (+36), Splitwise #5 (+38), and Kraken #7 (+22) rose sharply, while Investing.com #2, Finanzguru #3, and YNAB #4 entered the top five after being absent as of 2026-08-26. A reshuffle of this scale in seven days is not normal volatility and may include changes in collection or composition of HR's paid finance chart itself. Decisions based on HR finance data should be put on hold until reproducibility can be confirmed in the days ahead.
Confidence: Medium
5. The upper tier is completely frozen; all activity is in the #31–45 tail
top (1–10) had 96% retention, 0% new entries, and an average movement of 0.4. mid (11–30) had 93% / 1% / 1.3. Only bottom (31–45) loosened, at 86% retention, 8% new entries, and movement of 1.7. In practice, new apps can only be observed at #31 or below, consistent with the fact that most of today's new entries are concentrated between #35 and #45. Rather than planning for a move into the top ranks, it is more rational to identify apps early as they emerge in the tail.
Confidence: High
6. AI language learning rose simultaneously in three countries, with similar new education apps appearing
Fluzy: Learn Language with AI rose across three markets: HR #4 (+26), GB #8 (+20), and US #23 (+10). In addition, similar products appeared at the same time: Fluza: AI Language Tutor #30 in US, SayDuo: AI Language Learning #34 in HR, and Linguza: AI English Tutor #18 (+10) in US. android-education recorded 18 new entries. This is not a one-off hit; the category as a whole appears to be shifting toward AI tutor-style products.
Confidence: High
7. PDF readers rose in parallel across GB, JP, and KR
Fast PDF Reader & Viewer reached GB #17 (+18), PDF Mate - Launcher reached JP #12 (+16), Run PDF-Read PDF reached JP #13 (+13), while KR saw PDF Reader: View, Edit, Scan at #14 (+22) and PDF Reader, View All PDFs at #21 (+18). Instant PDF Reader also reached #27 (+12) in DE. General-purpose utilities with nearly identical functionality rose by double digits day-over-day across four markets, suggesting a change in traffic sources for business/tool apps, such as preinstalls or advertising.
Confidence: Medium
8. JP's points/rewards and Rakuten ecosystem, and KR's new games, show locally specific activity
In JP, points-and-rewards apps were concentrated: Rakuten Household Account Book #6 (+26), Rakuten TV #13 (+25) / #19 (+24), Mirupo #8 (+24), EDION App #17 (+27), and new entrant Chadepo #20. In KR, Clash of Critters #1 and Bunker TapTap Defense #2 entered the upper free ranks after being absent on the baseline date, 로그W entered at #10, and 갓오브하이스쿨 콜라보 reached #11 (+23). While global players dominate the top 10, this local tier is where each market differs.
Confidence: High
9. US paid games, led by indie titles, rose sharply over seven days
Tiny Terraces #5 (+23), Slots & Daggers #8 (+19), and Afterplace #19 (+24) all rose in US game/paid. Elsewhere, KR saw Hero Siege: Pocket Edition #9 (+30) and LIMBO #4 after being absent on the baseline date, while The Exit 8 #3 entered in JP after also being absent. One-time-purchase indie games are moving simultaneously across multiple markets. android-game, with 23 new entries and 94% top-10 retention, is also one of the faster-turning categories overall.
Confidence: Medium
10. The upper tier is occupied by global players common to all six countries, leaving no room for entry
Canva and X rank #1 in all six markets: DE, GB, HR, JP, KR, and US. WhatsApp (in both android-android-wear and communication), ChatGPT, Duolingo, Tinder, ReelShort, Spotify, Uber, Expo Go, Microsoft Authenticator, and LinkedIn are also in the top 10 across all six markets. Combined with a 0% new-entry rate in the top tier, the upper ranks of general-purpose categories should be read as effectively fixed.
Confidence: High
11. Same-day entries in two countries for event apps: eBay Open 2026 and Sir TV
eBay Open 2026 entered android-events/free simultaneously at GB #22 / DE #42, while Sir TV (an Arabic sports-streaming app) entered at HR #42 / DE #44. Pokémon Events entered at #12 in US. android-events is a small category with 11 charts and 10 new entries, but apps tied to time-bound events peak within days of appearing, so today is the deadline for spotting them.
Confidence: Medium
12. Static categories: communication has 100% top-10 retention, while libraries-and-demo has three new entries
android-communication has 100% top-10 retention; android-libraries-and-demo has only three new entries and 99% retention; android-shopping and android-auto-and-vehicles are also at 99%; and android-weather has five new entries and 98% retention. These are categories where it can be observed as fact that there was no activity, and they can be excluded from today's planning targets.
Confidence: High
13. Collection rate is 72%; DE and GB TOP_GROSSING/TOP_PAID are almost entirely unavailable
Of 630 planned charts, 452 were collected (16,575 rows), while 178 charts were not collected. The degraded list spans TOP_GROSSING / TOP_PAID in nearly every category for DE and GB; paid charts are also broadly missing for HR, JP, and KR. Therefore, interpretations such as "there was no movement in DE grossing" are not valid, and conclusions on DE and GB paid charts should be deferred today. Of the 452 charts, 422 could be compared with the previous run.
Confidence: High
Recommended Actions
- Recheck HR's android-tools/TOP_GROSSING and android-finance/TOP_GROSSING as the top priority in tomorrow's collection. If the complete reshuffle from #6 through #16 and the finance top-five reset persist, it indicates a chart-composition change; if they revert within a day, they can be classified as collection-related noise. Until this is resolved, do not use HR paid-chart figures as evidence for planning.
- Investigate collection failures for DE and GB TOP_GROSSING / TOP_PAID as the highest priority. Most of the 178 uncollected charts are concentrated in paid categories in these two markets, leaving revenue rankings in two major European markets effectively blind.
- Add the two clusters—AI photo/video generation (Muselab AI, Dance AI, Gallery) and AI language tutors (Fluzy, Fluza, SayDuo, Linguza)—to separate watchlists and track their rank trajectories daily from tomorrow onward. Both meet the strongest early signal: simultaneous movement across multiple countries.
- Limit planning targets to the #31–45 range. The top tier offers no room for entry, with 0% new entries and 96% retention, while only the bottom tier has liquidity, with 8% new entries and average movement of 1.7.
- Aggregate short-drama apps (HotShort JP #8 +26, VibeShort JP #17 +21, YouDrama KR #23 +22, GoodShort GB #22 +18, BlinkDrama GB #25 +19, and new entrants JoyReels and ShortsWave HR) as one cross-market cluster. Individually, these are mid-tier movements, but they are moving in the same direction across markets and are worth treating as a category-level demand shift.
- Track JP's points/rewards and retail apps (Rakuten Household Account Book #6, Mirupo #8, EDION App #17, and new entrant Chadepo #20) alongside KR counterparts (이마트24 #10 and OK캐쉬백 #18). Whether this is seasonal activity driven by the promotional cycle at the beginning of September can be assessed using same-weekday data next week.
- Extend the archive retention period to remove the operational constraint of having a baseline only seven days ago. Until at least 30 days of data have accumulated, label this section by the actual number of days rather than "monthly."
Data Quality Notes
The configuration called for 630 charts; 452 charts (16,575 rows) were actually collected, leaving 178 uncollected. Of recent runs, five were partially completed and 28 fetches failed. Missing data spans TOP_GROSSING / TOP_PAID in nearly every category for DE and GB, and remains widespread in paid categories for HR, JP, KR, and US. Therefore, calmness in today's paid and grossing charts likely means "not visible," not "did not move," and no conclusion is drawn for DE and GB grossing/paid. Of the 452 charts, 422 could be compared with the prior day, 2026-09-01; rows in charts without a comparison target were not counted as new entries (because a chart without a prior collection cannot be classified as new). The baseline date, 2026-08-26, is the oldest date in the archive and only seven days ago. The report's "monthly gains" are effectively one-week changes and cannot be read as monthly trends. On the metadata side, developer is missing for 82,617 records, ratingCount for 82,617 records, and rating for 4,889 records; consequently, this report does not analyze concentration by developer (the developers holding most slots field at each tier is blank) or validate findings using rating counts.
