KEN’S CAT LOG

Daily Viral Video — 2026-09-17

Only YouTube and Bluesky provided verifiable examples of videos themselves going viral with clear metrics. On Reddit, X, and Lemmy, it was difficult to find “today’s viral videos” accompanied by view and like counts.

Today’s Viral Videos — 2026-09-17

I checked five social networks today—Reddit, X, YouTube, Bluesky, and Lemmy—but honestly, only YouTube and Bluesky had videos I could confidently call genuinely viral. On YouTube, official new music videos and film trailers were exploding through TikTok-driven momentum, while Bluesky saw feel-good raccoon and sloth clips alongside political videos gaining traction. By contrast, searches for “viral videos” on Reddit, X, and Lemmy mostly surfaced text-based opinion posts and follow-up articles; only a few, if any, posts revealed the video’s own view or like counts. Overall, today’s growth seemed to come from two patterns: “pre-planned official releases” and “political or social outrage.”

Across platforms

  • Political and social outrage performs strongly across platforms. The Reddit “Hindutva Aunty” video (910 points, 548 comments), political clips on Bluesky (708 likes for a Kash Patel hearing clip, multiple protest videos targeting Madrid regional president Ayuso), and political opinion posts on X (kylekuzma’s Hamas controversy, about 2.9 million views)—regardless of platform, divisive social and political topics drew the strongest reactions. Note, however, that the X example is a text post, not a video.
  • The “main release + secondary reactions” model grows as a package. Falling In Reverse, LE SSERAFIM, and Geometry Dash on YouTube all generated large volumes of reaction videos and clips alongside their music videos or trailers. Building anticipation through teasers and advance releases before dropping the main content was the most reproducible growth pattern observed today.
  • Platforms with accessible metrics are actually in the minority. Specific numbers were available on YouTube and Bluesky, but on Reddit, X, and Lemmy, it was possible to find topics generating discussion without finding the video’s own view or like counts. Each network measures “virality” so differently that direct comparison is inherently difficult.

Platform by platform

Reddit: I collected one thread each from 12 subreddits, but there were almost no posts linking directly to videos or showing views and likes. The strongest performer was outrage content such as the “Hindutva Aunty” video about a woman arrested after trying to impose vegetarianism (r/20sIndiaReal, 910 points, 548 comments). Japanese search terms produced no relevant results.

X: I searched Explore trends such as Africa, Serbia, Apple, and Hamas, but these were not video-specific terms, so nearly every high-performing post was text-heavy political or current-events content. I found seven posts explicitly mentioning video, but only one had more than double-digit likes (StaerckLauren, 48 likes and 209,000 views), making it hard to call any of them genuinely viral videos.

YouTube: Since search pages could not be opened, the research relied on aggregators such as trends24.in. This produced the strongest examples of videos actually going viral: Falling In Reverse’s new “Joseph” music video (6 million views, featuring Corey Taylor and Serj Tankian), the new Hunger Games trailer (1.6 million views in 11 hours, or 165,000 views per hour—the fastest rate found), and M!LK’s new music video (13 million views in just under three days in Japan). The Jimmy Kimmel × Talarico interview is an example of a long-running viral hit that reignites whenever political controversy resurfaces.

Bluesky: I extracted only posts with embedded video from the official “Discover” algorithmic feed. The results split clearly into comforting content, such as a sculptor moving scrap metal and videos of “Jimothy” the raccoon, and Spanish-language political clips, such as protests against Madrid regional president Ayuso. View counts are unavailable through the public API; only likes and reposts are available.

Lemmy: Only four posts had videos themselves as the main subject, and their scores ranged from a few dozen to around 100—two to three orders of magnitude smaller than on other social networks. The top example was a challenge video about removing a mandarin from a glass of water (98 points, 31 comments). Video-oriented communities such as !publicfreakout and !mademesmile had largely stopped updating, and Japanese-language communities were effectively nonexistent.

What to watch

Recommendations

  • YouTube and Bluesky can be tracked continuously using this approach (trend aggregators / Discover feed extraction), so keep these two as the core platforms going forward.
  • On X, switch next time from Explore trend terms to video-specific search terms such as “viral video” or “バズった,” otherwise video virality cannot be observed.
  • On Reddit, revise filters to target only threads whose body includes video links and view counts.
  • Political and social outrage consistently grows strongly across multiple networks, so controversy-driven clips are worth tracking separately.
  • Bluesky’s search API (403) and video-only feed (502) were unavailable this time, so retry at a different time next round.
  • Lemmy can be deprioritized as a source for observing viral video trends, as there were almost no new video posts within the last 24–48 hours.

Data quality

Only Bluesky (12 posts) met the completion target of “10 posts per social network with links, authors, and metrics”; YouTube reached eight. Reddit, X, and Lemmy produced 0, 7 (only one meaningfully viral), and 4 respectively, due to a structural inability to obtain views or likes for the videos themselves. Reddit and X in particular failed to capture “the video itself” because of search-term and data limitations, leaving three of the five platforms well below the target.

What people say
  • #7 r/20sIndiaReal · 910 points · 548 comments · 2026-09-11: A video of the “Hindutva Aunty,” who threw stones while trying to impose vegetarianism, is causing outrage. The top comment (72 points) says, “She called the Police and herself got arrested.” This was the thread with the most comment activity in the collection.
  • #9 r/rnb · 1,615 points · 92 comments · 2026-09-11: A Beyoncé lookalike video, “To the left! to the left!,” is getting a huge response. The top comment (128 points) simply repeats the line, while another (86 points) mistakenly says, “Thats clearly Luther Vandross.”
  • #3 r/dcu · 2,837 points · 69 comments · 2026-09-14: A clip capturing actor Aaron Pierre’s accent slipping has become a continuing topic, and he is reportedly aware of it himself. “Everybody is talking about the slip” (25 points) appears alongside the positive “He’s great tho” (8 points).
  • #2 r/BollywoodMusic · 365 points · 37 comments · 2026-09-14: A remake music video for a Bollywood song became a topic on X, and the debate spilled over to Reddit. Opinions are split between “the way its filmed...does feel very secondary to the original” (68 points) and “Sunidhi nailed the remake” (43 points).
  • #12 r/Unislamicmemes · 24 points · 5 comments · 2026-09-16: A video reportedly showing a three-year-old girl being sold as a “wife” to a 60-year-old man in Afghanistan is spreading, drawing angry comments such as “She already looks like she is 40. What a life...” (12 points).
  • #8 r/biggboss · 22 points · 15 comments · 2026-09-14: A conspiracy-style discussion over an unaired Bigg Boss clip, alleging that the show may be shielding a particular contestant (an 8-point comment).
  • #4 r/rusAskReddit · 10 points · 30 comments · 2026-09-16: A thread asking about the origin of a creepy video found in the poster’s old files. An AI-generation theory emerged, with a notable comment saying “голова на кресле появляется из воздуха” (“a head appears out of thin air on the chair,” 7 points).
  • #11 r/MichaelDoesLife · 3 points · 8 comments · 2026-09-16: In a small subreddit with 1,081 members, people discuss streamer Michael having “gone viral.” One comment mocks the overstatement: “imagine...people act like it’s a miracle he got 30k likes on a tweet” (1 point).
  • #5 r/youtube · 1,232 points · 492 comments · 2026-09-12: Not a thread about videos going viral today or this week, but a nostalgia thread choosing a “YouTube Hall of Fame.” Classic all-time examples such as Charlie Bit My Finger, Gangnam Style, and Chocolate Rain appear (345-point and 203-point comments).
  • #1 (11 points, 2026-09-12) and #10 (1 point, 2026-09-11): Both are concerns from creators who have stopped going viral. On r/InstagramMarketing, users point to algorithm changes with comments such as “faceless content is getting lower reach” (7 points); r/NewTubers discusses a channel whose first video got 35.9k impressions before its reach declined.
Signals
  • The strongest growth is in outrage and anger content: the “Hindutva Aunty” video (910 points, 548 comments) and the suspected human-trafficking video from Afghanistan (#12) drew clearly stronger reactions than entertainment clips. Political and social outrage has strong distribution power on Reddit.
  • What is getting only casual attention: r/youtube’s “Hall of Fame” and the general discussion on r/TeenIndia are not videos currently going viral; they are generic topics that happened to match the search terms. The word “viral” appears, but they have no relation to videos rapidly rising in the last 24–48 hours.
  • The surprising finding: across all 12 threads, not a single one states the video’s own view count, like count, or share count. The only available metrics are Reddit score and comment count; no one cites the original video’s metrics.
  • Divided opinions: the remake music video on r/BollywoodMusic is sharply split within one thread between “inferior copy” criticism (68 points) and “well done” praise (43 points). There is no consensus on the quality of viral videos.
Limits
  • Collection covered only 12 subreddits × one thread each, leaving no subreddit examined in depth. Comparison with other threads within the same subreddit was not possible.
  • Japanese search terms, “バズってる動画” and “話題の動画,” unexpectedly matched threads in r/rusAskReddit (Russian) and r/rnb (English), producing no Japanese-language topics at all. This did not function as a search for viral videos in Japanese.
  • The requested brief fields—“link to the video itself, author, views, likes, and posting date”—could not be obtained from any of the 12 threads. Only #1 included direct links to the videos themselves (two Instagram Reels URLs); the rest linked only to Reddit threads, with no original-video views or likes. Therefore Reddit alone cannot satisfy brief.md’s completion target of “10 items with links, authors, and numbers.”
  • The time window is inconsistent as well. Post dates range from 2026-09-11 to 09-16, and the r/InstagramMarketing and r/NewTubers threads are not about videos rapidly rising within the last 48 hours, but creator concerns spanning months.

X — Today’s Viral Videos

The source was output/x.posts.md / x.posts.json: 40 posts from 37 accounts collected by a worker on X, plus an Explore-trend snapshot. Search terms were “Africa,” “Serbia,” “Apple,” “Canada,” “Zcash,” “#sweepstakes,” “#giveaways,” “#chance,” “Lauren,” and “Hamas”—all trend names from X’s Explore page, rather than video-specific queries like “went viral / viral video / バズってる動画” used in the Reddit stage. This is covered further under Limits below.

Accounts
  • Accounts boosted by a single post (follower size unknown, one-off post type): @kylekuzma, former NBA player Kyle Kuzma, had the biggest response in this collection—10,092 likes, 2,357 replies, and about 2.9 million views (2026-09-15). @PossiblyApollo (12,697 likes) and @eva_kirby21 (3,217 likes, about 840,000 views) each grew on a single sarcastic tweet about Apple TV programming.
  • Accounts earning through two posts: @TheSirRobotto had two hits for the “Serbia” search, totaling 12,526 likes, including one post with 10,955 likes. The account’s sports discussion about Welsh independence and Champions League eligibility is a case where one large post generated nearly all engagement.
  • Accounts posting frequently but receiving almost no reaction: @TryMamaKoala, the official account for a cloth-diaper brand, earned two likes across two posts; @noanya93, an account promoting clips from ABEMA programs, earned zero likes across two posts. Both mention video itself, but neither spread.
  • Giveaway/contest bot cluster: @Hasan_NFTOX, @zksnarks_, @MATRIX_cr7, @TempestWg, @CSharp66427821, and @user12748904 appeared together in searches for “#giveaways,” “#sweepstakes,” “#chance,” and “Zcash.” Their likes ranged from 0 to 506 and consisted mostly of mechanical giveaway and micro-crypto promotion.
Posts
  1. #39 @kylekuzma — 10,092 likes · 1,550 reposts · 2,357 replies · about 2.9 million views (2026-09-15). A quote tweet offering the political opinion that anyone seeking freedom for Palestine should also seek freedom from Hamas. It was the most reactive post in the collection, but it is text, not video. Found through the “Hamas” search.
  2. #11 @PossiblyApollo and #9 @eva_kirby21 — Sarcastic posts about Apple TV programming (The Studio, Widow’s Bay, Pluribus, Severance) reached 12,697 likes (image, 614 reposts) and 3,217 likes with about 840,000 views (2026-09-15, image), respectively. They are Emmy-adjacent television discussion, not video posts.
  3. #5/#7 @TheSirRobotto — A Champions League eligibility debate spun off from arguments over Welsh independence. The first post had 10,955 likes, 511 replies, and about 710,000 views; the second had 1,571 likes (both 2026-09-15). It appeared in a “Serbia” search but was effectively a football and political discussion.
  4. #21 @CSharp66427821 and #24 @user12748904 — “Quad Goals” giveaway ads for the Fanatics app. The post text includes durations of “00:29” and “01:22,” making them among the few identifiable video examples. However, they had just 1 like / 0 likes and around 59 to 2 views—effectively no sign of distribution.
  5. #25/#26 @TryMamaKoala — Two posts explicitly labeled “clip” and “video,” showing how to use cloth diapers. They promote a TikTok contest and received 0–2 likes and 18–28 views each: videos were mentioned, but they were not getting attention at all.
  6. #31/#32 @noanya93 — Two Japanese posts introducing clips from ABEMA’s variety show CHANCE & CHANGE (a kendo joke and a strawberry comedy routine), found through “#chance.” The program content is specific, but there was no response: 0 likes and 2–3 views.
  7. #34 @StaerckLauren — “Maddie Kowalski: Eiffel Tower Photos, Social Media Posts & Online Buzz video in comment.” It had only 48 likes but about 209,000 views, with views disproportionally high relative to likes. This is a typical engagement-bait pattern: “the video is in the comments.”
  8. #4 @gomezftstylesx — A response to the quote “We didn’t go to Africa, by the way.” It is small at 57 likes but has 13 replies, indicating a high reaction rate and functioning as a branch point in a discussion of a celebrity’s apparent statement.
Signals
  • What grows is political/current-affairs opinion, not video. Top-liked posts include kylekuzma’s Hamas controversy, PossiblyApollo/eva_kirby21’s Apple TV scheduling criticism, and TheSirRobotto’s football × independence debate—all text-led opinion tweets. No top post has a video as its primary subject.
  • Posts mentioning “video” are uniformly quiet. The Fanatics ads with 00:29/01:22 durations, TryMamaKoala’s cloth-diaper clips, noanya93’s ABEMA clips, and StaerckLauren’s “video in comment”—among these seven video-related posts, only StaerckLauren exceeded double-digit likes, at 48. Within the collected sample, video content going viral could not be observed.
  • Giveaway hashtags (#sweepstakes, #giveaways, #chance) are effectively dominated by bots and promotional accounts. Likes ranged from 0 to single digits and views stopped at a few dozen; posts recycled identical ad copy or redirected users to Discord. The hashtags may trend, but individual posts are not being read.
  • A surprising finding: Posts such as StaerckLauren’s, with few likes but disproportionately high views, were the closest thing to viral among video-related posts. This is more likely an engagement-bait format hiding the video in replies than genuine rapid distribution.
Limits
  • The queries were not video-specific. The 10 terms used by the worker—Africa, Serbia, Apple, Canada, Zcash, #sweepstakes, #giveaways, #chance, Lauren, and Hamas—were simply searches for names listed in X Explore. They are not dedicated video queries equivalent to the Reddit-stage terms “went viral / viral video / バズってる動画 / 話題の動画.” As a result, most of the 40 collected posts concerned politics, current events, or giveaway ads, and posts satisfying the brief’s request for “videos” were not really in scope to begin with.
  • No metadata distinguishes video from photo. The collected data includes only a hasPhoto flag, with no video indicator or duration data. Seven posts containing durations (such as 00:29) or terms like “video” and “clip” were manually identified, but the text alone cannot establish whether other posts, with or without images, embed video.
  • Explore reflects Croatia, the session’s connection location. Seven of the 10 trends were “Trending in Croatia,” and three were regional-unspecified “Politics · Trending.” No trends from Japan, the United States, or other regions were included, so this is not a global overview of viral video.
  • The completion target of 10 items with links/authors/metrics was not met. Only seven posts mentioned video (#21, #24, #25, #26, #31, #32, #34), and nearly all had single-digit likes and only a few dozen views. No video that could reasonably be called rapidly growing in the past 24–48 hours was found. X alone cannot present 10 “today’s viral videos”; the seven video mentions found are listed above.

YouTube

YouTube — Today’s Viral Videos

YouTube’s own search-results page could not be read in this environment because only the footer rendered without JavaScript. Research therefore began with aggregators such as “youtube.trends24.in,” which displays U.S. and Japanese rising rankings with views per hour, and “mostviewed.today,” then corroborated listed videos through news coverage and official social posts. This means the results center on “official releases rising in trends and their reactions,” rather than purely user-generated viral content. See Limits for details.

Channels
  • Falling In Reverse (official channel; approximately 1.25 million subscribers) — rock band; its new song is going viral through TikTok
  • Jimmy Kimmel Live (approximately 22 million subscribers) — ABC late-night show; this time, a YouTube-exclusive political interview is the focus
  • Lionsgate Movies (approximately 3 million subscribers) — trailer for the latest Hunger Games film
  • M!LK OFFICIAL (approximately 1.6 million subscribers) — Japanese dance and vocal group
  • LE SSERAFIM (under HYBE LABELS/SOURCE MUSIC) — music video collaboration with Overwatch
  • Aぇ! group (under Universal Music Japan) — has just released its first band-song music video
  • RobTopGames (approximately 19.7 million subscribers) — the channel of the Geometry Dash creator
  • Hellaverse On Prime / channels around Vivziepop — Helluva Boss Season 3 trailer
Videos
  1. Jimmy Kimmel’s Interview with James Talarico (Jimmy Kimmel Live, posted 2026-09-10)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLDE9LrGpNk (related public segment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-Y-y-d8R9Q )
It reached 5 million views in its first 24 hours, 6.8 million by Saturday night, and about 10 million in trend aggregation as of 9/17; reporting on 9/16 said it had surpassed 9 million. Kimmel skipped television broadcast and released this 20-minute interview with Texas Senate candidate James Talarico exclusively on YouTube, alleging that the FCC pressured ABC. After FCC chair Brendan Carr called it a “handout hype-seeking Harlan hoax,” controversy and distribution accelerated further from 9/12 onward; as of 9/16 it continued to be covered by news-style videos such as “Top U.S. & World Headlines.” Strictly speaking, it is more than 48 hours old, but it is a case of a long-running viral hit continuing to grow whenever the political dispute develops.

  2. Falling In Reverse - "Joseph" (official Falling In Reverse channel, released 2026-09-14/15)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tk9TM7-eTmw
6 million views and 369,000 likes, according to U.S. No. 1 rising data from youtube.trends24.in. A new music video featuring Corey Taylor of Slipknot and Serj Tankian of System of a Down. For a channel with 1.25 million subscribers, its growth is extraordinary; reporting from Blabbermouth/Consequence says total streams surpassed 350 million following TikTok distribution. The appeal of a first-ever collaboration between two major vocalists translated directly into views.

  3. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping | Official Trailer 2 (Lionsgate Movies, released 2026-09-16)
    https://youtu.be/kNWCJz3y8bY
Around 1.6 million views within 11 hours of release, at 165,000 views per hour—the fastest growth rate found in this research, according to youtube.trends24.in. This second trailer, released ahead of the film’s November 20 premiere, gives new cast members Joseph Zada and Whitney Peak their full introduction. Its tone is drawing attention as fitting the expectation that it may be the darkest Hunger Games installment yet, according to Deadline/GamesRadar+ coverage.

  4. M!LK “Jikū Koete Universe” Official Music Video (M!LK OFFICIAL, released 2026-09-14 20:00)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpIw7rSLRqc
13 million views in just under three days, or 215,000 views per hour, on youtube.trends24.in’s Japan edition. This is unusual growth for a channel with 1.6 million subscribers. Its positioning as the conclusion to a three-part, love-themed series had been carefully built through advance announcements, early streaming, and teaser films.

  5. LE SSERAFIM (르세라핌) 'Made My Night' OFFICIAL MV with OVERWATCH (released 2026-09-11 0:00 KST)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1Lah0BM0KQ
12 million views and 77,000 views per hour, according to the U.S. edition of youtube.trends24.in. A collaboration music video with the popular game Overwatch, released to coincide with BlizzCon 2026. The K-pop and game-IP crossover itself has distribution power, and a large number of reaction videos and clips have emerged as well, with more than 10 reaction videos appearing in search results.

  6. Aぇ! group “Emotion” Official Music Video (released 2026-09-16 21:00)
    https://youtu.be/tdznAT137QI
Around 350,000 views and 32,000 views per hour within roughly half a day to one day of release, according to youtube.trends24.in’s Japan edition. The group’s first band song and title track portrays restrained passion through performance in front of a huge LED screen, and coverage from outlets such as Natalie Music describes it as a “new side” of the group. This was the newest video in the research, released within 24 hours.

  7. Geometry Dash 2.209 Trailer (RobTopGames, released 2026-09-15)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLlwslqKvQc
About 960,000 views in two days according to a post by the developer on X. The trailer previews a new update, including moderator changes. Its distinguishing feature is that long-term core fans immediately produced reaction and analysis videos such as “Solved Robtop’s Update Teaser”—a classic pattern where secondary fan reactions outnumber the main release.

  8. Helluva Boss Season 3 Part 1 – Official Trailer (Prime Video/Hellaverse-related channel, released around 2026-09-15)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Fq4VRxhdKI
At roughly 8.5K views, its absolute reach is smaller than the examples above, but its engagement rate—likes plus comments divided by views—was the highest measured by youtube.trends24.in. Released ahead of Season 3’s October 14 debut, the trailer prompted the fandom to respond immediately to relationship foreshadowing between characters, with reaction videos and analysis posts appearing in rapid succession. It is an example of a “small but intensely engaged” viral moment.

Signals
  • “Official new releases” × “pre-release buzz-building” is driving growth. Falling In Reverse, M!LK, LE SSERAFIM, and Aぇ! group all followed the same pattern: teasers, advance releases, or collaboration announcements established anticipation before the main music video rapidly rose after launch. These were not accidental overnight viral moments; they were designed.
  • Political and social conflict has dramatically greater staying power. The Kimmel × Talarico interview was still growing nearly a week after release and reignited with each development, such as the FCC chair’s rebuttal. While music videos and trailers peak after a few days, controversy decays more slowly.
  • Fandom intensity cannot be measured by views alone. The Helluva Boss trailer has fewer than 10,000 views but the highest engagement rate in the set. Viral activity can be missed without looking at growth and engagement rates, not just absolute totals.
  • Reaction videos and clips grow simultaneously with the main video. Falling In Reverse, LE SSERAFIM, and Geometry Dash each produced a large number of reactions and analysis videos beyond the original itself. On YouTube, the viral structure is “main release + secondary reactions.”
Limits
  • YouTube search and trending pages could not be directly retrieved. Opening youtube.com/results?... and youtube.com/feed/trending through WebFetch returned only pre-JavaScript footer content. The intended workflow—reading titles, channels, views, and dates from page HTML—therefore did not work. The method was changed to use youtube.trends24.in, which provides rising snapshots and views per hour, plus mostviewed.today as starting points, then verify listed videos through news coverage and official X posts.
  • The list stopped at eight, not 10. Against the brief’s target of 10 items per network, only eight videos had links, publishers, and metrics that could be corroborated. As above, the aggregator listed a limited number of usable videos; candidates such as Pekora’s Hololive announcement stream and a video by Kiyo appeared only by name in trend lists, so they were excluded because specific videos and metrics could not be identified.
  • The aggregators have geographic bias. youtube.trends24.in’s “United States” page reflects rising activity from the session’s U.S. connection point, while the “Japan” page was separately retrieved with a regional setting. Both are only snapshots observable by that aggregator, not comprehensive global coverage of today’s viral videos.
  • The sample leans toward official releases, rather than accidental UGC. Trending rankings are dominated by videos from major labels, studios, and developers. The research method did not capture the type of spontaneous viral moments—someone filming an unexpected event—that surfaced in Reddit/X-stage findings.
  • The Kimmel × Talarico video is not strictly a post from the last 24–48 hours. Its initial release was 9/10, but it accelerated again after the FCC chair’s 9/12 response and related news videos were still being made as of 9/16. The decision explicitly prioritizes “still growing right now” over strict timeline precision.

Signals
  • Videos appearing in Bluesky’s official “Discover” algorithmic feed broadly divide into two groups: (1) comforting or surprising content such as cute animals and craftsmanship, and (2) clips of U.S. and Spanish political news.
  • Political content, including the Kash Patel hearing and protests against Ayuso, has a relatively high repost-to-like ratio, suggesting more endorsement and deliberate sharing. Animal and art content, by contrast, produces far more likes with relatively fewer reposts, reflecting casual appreciation.
  • Multiple Spanish-language political clips from eldiario.es and publico.es appeared together in Discover, making protests around Madrid regional president Ayuso a mini-trend within this snapshot.
  • A standalone pet account (Jimothy the raccoon) and a personal account (Abdul El-Sayed’s personal story) earned as many or more likes than news outlets. More than follower counts, content appeal—comfort or relatability—appears to drive virality.
Limits
  • Bluesky’s public app.bsky.feed.searchPosts keyword-search endpoint consistently returned HTTP 403 Forbidden for multiple queries including viral and cat, preventing anonymous access. Therefore, no keyword search for “viral videos” could be conducted.
  • Attempts to retrieve Bluesky’s official video-only “Video (thevids)” feed (app.bsky.feed.generator/thevids) through app.bsky.feed.getFeed repeatedly returned HTTP 502 Bad Gateway, suggesting that the feed generator may have been down.
  • Because those two options were unavailable, the method used official “Discover (whats-hot)” and “What’s Hot Classic (hot-classic)” feeds as substitutes, extracting only posts with video embeds. This is not a strict search for “viral videos,” but an extraction of videos ranked highly by the algorithm.
  • Bluesky’s public API does not provide play counts. Likes and reposts were used as proxy metrics for growth.
  • The bsky.app search screen is a client-side-rendered SPA, so static retrieval did not display post content. API retrieval was the only workable substitute.
  • Twelve videos were collected, meeting the brief’s target of 10. However, all were from 2026-09-16 and depend on Discover’s ordering at retrieval time; the list is not strictly limited to posts created “today.”

→ The strongest purely video-focused Lemmy post within the last 24 hours. It is a magic-like science challenge, and the comments have turned into a contest of explanations for the physics trick.

  2. Article explaining the viral “fly brain simulation” (the original subject is a YouTube video)

→ The viral source video is YouTuber Ro0oney’s “I Put A Fly’s Conscious Brain into Minecraft,” connecting the complete fruit-fly neural connectome map “MaleCNS v1.0” to Minecraft. Spin-off videos involving Beat Saber gameplay and crypto trading are also mentioned, but Lemmy only contains a report that the topic is trending; the video’s own view count is not available on Lemmy.

→ An article about debate over a video of an athlete losing bladder control during a race that spread on social media. It sits near the 48-hour cutoff, but is included because it was one of the few examples with observable activity.

  4. Macklemore short video: “Artists should speak out against genocide”

→ Zero comments and virtually no reaction within Lemmy. It may be growing on YouTube, but Lemmy is quiet.

Signals
  • Lemmy has almost no culture of independently discovering videos going viral right now. Most posts found simply re-link videos or news that have already spread on TikTok, YouTube, or Reddit, such as the fly-brain-simulation article.
  • The only community where videos themselves are the focus is !«メールアドレス», where scores are in the tens to around 100 and comments range from a few to about 30. That is two to three orders of magnitude smaller than the large-scale viral reach on other platforms.
  • Communities that seem likely to collect viral videos, such as !publicfreakout and !mademesmile, are in fact stagnant: top listings remain filled with posts from months or years earlier, indicating slow turnover in Lemmy’s video communities.
  • No posts or communities corresponding to Japanese “viral videos” or “trending videos” were found. Lemmy appears centered on English-speaking users in Europe and North America, with extremely low posting frequency in Japanese communities.
Limits
  • The completion target of 10 could not be reached: only four posts within the last 24–48 hours had verifiable metrics such as score and comment count. This reflects Lemmy’s low scale and update frequency. Major likely video communities, including !interestingasfuck, !publicfreakout, !mademesmile, and !«メールアドレス», were checked individually, but had zero new video posts in the last one to two days.
  • The lemm.ee instance redirected search-API access to join-lemmy.org, making it effectively inaccessible, possibly due to an instance-side issue.
  • !«メールアドレス» returned a server error (HTTP 500), preventing content retrieval.
  • Japanese searches for “バズってる動画” returned no results on Lemmy. Japanese communities themselves are nearly absent, resulting in zero Japan-originated posts in this research.
  • Lemmy posts have no “view count” concept; only score (upvotes minus downvotes) and comment count are available. Therefore figures such as “hundreds of thousands of views,” common on other networks, cannot be obtained in principle. Scores and comments are used as proxy metrics above.

Recommended actions

  • Continue watching YouTube and Bluesky using this method (trend aggregators / Discover feed extraction).
  • On X, switch from Explore trend terms to video-specific queries next time.
  • On Reddit, revise filters to cover only threads whose body includes video links and view counts.
  • Political and social outrage grows consistently across multiple social networks, so controversy clips should be tracked separately.

Data-quality note

Of the five platforms, only Bluesky (12 posts) met the completion target of 10 items with metrics; YouTube stopped at eight. Reddit (effectively 0), X (effectively 1), and Lemmy (4) could not obtain views or likes for the videos themselves, leaving them well below the target.
